Bama Houston scholarships help Houston-area students attend The University of Alabama
HOW TO APPLY
All Houston-area students who have submitted their admissions application, including accompanying materials, to The University of Alabama by January 15 prior to their freshmen year are eligible for Bama Houston chapter scholarships. The scholarship application is part of the admissions application.
To maximize your potential to receive scholarship assistance, please attend an Alumni Scholarship Assistance Program (A$AP). These are published on our Events page and are held by the University in early fall (August or September) and spring.

The Selection Process
The Bama Houston Scholarship Committee reviews students’ applications based on the criteria set for each scholarship. Details are below. The number of recipients and award amounts vary based on projected endowment income.
Over the past three years, Bama Houston has awarded more than $85,000 to Houston-area students. For the 2024-2025 academic year, our Houston alumni chapter awarded over $23,000 in scholarship money.*
*An additional $9,000 was awarded through the Roberts Engineering Scholarship to 5 UA students from other parts of Texas.

Originally from Tuscumbia, Alabama, Magan Borden moved to Houston in 2018. She holds a bachelor’s degree in health sciences and is passionate about assisting students and their families through the college process. In her spare time, Magan loves to swim, cook, play with her dogs, and spend time with her family.
About Bama Houston Scholarships
Houston, Texas Alumni Chapter Endowed
Endowed October 1996
This scholarship is awarded to one or more entering freshmen from the Houston, Texas metro area based on academic achievement, leadership qualities, financial need and the potential to be future leaders of the Houston community. The award is automatically renewable for each subsequent year of a recipient’s undergraduate education, not to exceed eight semesters of undergraduate study, when a 3.0 GPA is maintained.
David E. Roberts, Jr. and Rebecca McKinney Roberts Endowed
Endowed May 2009
This scholarship alternates between the Houston Alumni Chapter and another alumni chapter in the state of Alabama. The Houston Alumni Chapter awards this scholarship in academic terms that end in even numbers. Selection is limited to entering freshmen students enrolling in the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering, or the Capstone College of Nursing at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
Roberts Engineering Endowed
Endowed January 2011
This one-year scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in the College of Engineering. First priority is given to a freshman and second priority is given to an undergraduate student. Selections are made by the Dean of Engineering and The University of Alabama National Alumni Association.
Houston Strong Alumni Endowed
Endowed July 2018
This four-year renewable scholarship recognizes students who have persisted in overcoming challenges. Priority consideration is given to entering freshmen from the greater Houston area who have achieved a minimum ACT score of 27, or an equivalent SAT score, and are involved in school or community organizations. Selections are made by The University of Alabama National Alumni Association.
Houston Emerging Leader Endowed
Endowed September 2022
This four-year renewable scholarship is awarded to an entering UA freshman from the Houston area who has demonstrated leadership and community service, as well as financial need. A one-page financial needs statement is required.
Kip Altstaetter Endowed
Endowed March 2022
This four-year renewable scholarship will be awarded to a freshman or transfer student who graduated from a Houston-area high school and is pursuing a degree in interior design or business administration.
Erik W. Pérez Excellence in Chemistry Endowed
Endowed March 2024
This four-year renewable scholarship will be awarded to an entering UA freshman who is enrolled in the College of Arts & Sciences. Preference will be given to a student who plans to major in chemistry or biochemistry.
